Agents of SHIELD is ready to bring Life Model Decoys to fruition, a marvelous development that begs the question - if LMDs are only coming into play in season 4, what in the MCU was Agent Koenig?

Dr. Radcliffe (John Hannah) closed out season 3 by breathing life into his latest creation - a robot by the name of Aida. The sting set off a summer full of speculation, and, as per executive producers Jeph Loeb and Jeff Bell, Life Model Decoys are indeed coming to Agents of SHIELD.

"Life Model Decoys is something we hinted at the end of last season, and, if we're any good at our job, hopefully we won't drop that ball," Bell told EnStars at San Diego Comic-Con.

"In fact, we'll throw it all the way into the end zone," Loeb added.

Considering Aida, now played by Mallory Jansen, is presumably Radcliffe's first attempt at a LMD, Agents of SHIELD is faced with one small peccadillo. As of season 2, viewers were convinced that Patton Oswalt's Koenig was Fury's secret piece of self-replicating tech. The theory was never actually confirmed, of course, leaving the door wide open for future exploration.

Oswalt's busy schedule has kept him off the ABC property through season 3, but Loeb and Bell are working hard to get the actor back in the studio.

"We hope to get Patton back and...I'm not going to say answer your questions, but at least complicate it further," Bell teased.

For his part, Oswalt would love the chance to play an entirely different character.

"He really wants to be Modok," Bell teased. "He wants to be a giant floating head with a little tiny body that goes around and kills people."

Don't we all, Oswalt. Don't. We. All.

Learn the truth behind the Life Model Decoys when Agents of SHIELD returns to ABC on Sept. 20 at 10 p.m. ET.
