Hawaii Five-0's Steve McGarrett needs to learn how to tap the breaks. It's a difficult lesson for the former Navy SEAL, and it's one Danny will look to drill into his partner in the season 7 premiere.

Five-0's leader had a close call in the season 6 finale, and it if weren't for Danno (Scott Caan), our hero would be six-feet under. Now, equipped with a new liver courtesy of his BFF, McGarrett (Alex O'Loughlin) will flaunt his good luck as he dives back into danger.

"There is an arc with Danny trying to get McGarrett to slow down a bit and appreciate the fact that he's been given a second chance - or fifth chance, maybe sixth, based on all the stuff he's gone through in the series," showrunner Peter Lenkov told TV Line.

According to new pics from the site, Detective Williams' entreaties will be in vain (see photos here). A serial killer/vigilante will have the task force mired in a frantic investigation, resulting in a bloody foot chase for McGarrett.

That's not to say Danny's words will fall entirely on deaf ears. The Grim Reaper nearly caught Steve at 39,000 feet, and the memory of the specter's icy grip will weigh heavily on the soldier.

When somebody has a near-death experience, they start to reflect on their life, and I think that he's going to do that. He's going to look back and say, "What's my legacy here? I almost died, and what do I have? I've lost my father, I've lost my mother, I've lost the woman that I've loved,'" Lenkov told Entertainment Weekly. "He just starts to reflect on everything, the choices that he's made and looks for a reason to continue doing what he's doing. That's going to play a little bit of a theme next year."

Will McGarrett continue to run head long into danger? Find out when Hawaii Five-0 returns Sept. 23 at 9 p.m. ET. Click the video below to get a sneak peek at the premiere.
