The Shadowhunters are welcome to crack the book on Magnus Bane, but they might not like what they find.

The High Warlock of Brooklyn took a special interest in Clary (Katherine McNamara) and co. during season 1, proving his worth in spades as Valentine (Alan Van Sprang) turned up the heat. Although Magnus (Harry Shum, Jr.) might be on the side of the angels now, his life wasn't always surreptitious flirting and gravity-defying hair.

"Magnus is going to be a character that we explore a lot more. This guy has lived for so many centuries, he has so many experiences that play into the story," Shum told Hollywood Life. "He's kind of a tormented soul. He's been through a lot and is covering up a lot. I find a new layer to him every time I open a script."

Lilith's children are a capricious breed, after all. Tempered yet impatient, Magnus' past is littered with stories that could just as easily curl your hair as elicit a choking laugh.

On a lighter note, the human/demon hybrid has seemingly found his better half in the form of Alec Lightwood (Matthew Daddario). The Freeform series took the pair's budding romance from zero to 60 last season, and 2017 will be an exciting time for Malec 'shippers as Shum has described the couple as "soulmates."

"I think in the books they are," the actor explained. "They're almost polar opposites when you really think about it. It's like that Paula Abdul song Opposites Attract. That has a lot to do with it because there's so much that can be learned from both sides. Even this guy that's been around for so long, there's a lot that he can learn from Alec and vice versa."

Catch up with Magnus, Alec, and the rest of the Downworlder gang when Shadowhunters returns to Freeform in early 2017. Click the video below to see a preview for the series' latest episode, "Morning Star."
