CNN Anchor Cancer: Zoraida Sambolin Admits Her Own Struggle with Breast Cancer Says Was Encouraged by Angelina Jolie [VIDEO[
Hours after the New York Times published Angelina Jolie's op-ed about her recent double mastectomy, a CNN anchor came forward with her own struggle with the illness.
Early Star co-anchor Zoraida Sambolin told viewers of the morning show that she was diagnosed with breast cancer three weeks ago, and was encouraged by Jolie's article to tell her story publicly.
"[Jolie] said I feel empowered, that I'm in a strong choice that in no way diminishes my femininity," Sambolin said. "You know, it's nice to hear somebody else talk about it and have that support of a lot of women around you."
Jolie said in the article that she underwent the procedure because she carries the BRCA1, which gave her and 87% chance of developing breast cancer. Sambolin said that while she does not know if she too has the gene, she participated in genetic testing due to the large number of women in her family.
Sambolin does have a history of fibrocystic breast tissue, which she said made a diagnosis difficult, and she said that made her vigilant about getting tested: "I didn't mess around. I went when I was supposed to go, and I followed it diligently."
But the anchor appeared relieved to discuss her diagnosis. "At the end of the day, I need to have peace of mind," she said. "I need to sleep at night. I have two kids that are my world, like any woman, and it's what you think about.
"So I thought for me, this would be the best decision moving forward so I could feel confident that it's not something that I'm going to have to deal with that much more in the future."
Sambolin's surgery is scheduled for May 28th, and she said she is opting for a surgical procedure similar to Jolie's.
Fans of the Early Start program have come out to support Sambolin on social media.
"You are an amazing and strong woman and I know you will beat this!" said Facebook user Jennifer Majerus.
"Praying for you Z!," Facebook user Charles Barnes posted. "I know you will overcome this challenge!"
