Fans were stunned when This Is Us closed the midseason finale with Toby (Chris Sullivan) hooked up to machines and in a fight for his life after making a huge romantic gesture to Kate (Chrissy Metz) by flying cross-country to be with her and telling her he would go back on his diet for her, and now, Justin Hartley, who portrays Kate's twin brother, may be hinting that they should be concerned about what happens to him when the show returns.

Discussing the show while walking the red carpet at the Critic's Choice Awards this weekend, Hartley bluntly told reporters asking about Toby's fate that they didn't want to know what happened to him.

"You think you want to know, but you don't want me to tell you," he said.

Hartley's comment could be taken as a warning that Toby may not survive, though it wouldn't necessarily mean he was off the show, something that has been speculated as a possibility since Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) is still a part of the show through flashbacks in the past, though the character is dead in the present day.

Keeping with the theme that Toby isn't necessarily going to be alive when the show returns, Hartley also cautions that Sullivan's social media posts which show him still on the lot where the show is filmed aren't necessarily a sign the character is sticking around-either as one that is dead or alive.

"We're in the middle of a reshoot thing...not to suggest that he dies or he doesn't," Hartley said.

This Is Us returns Jan. 10 on NBC.
