Fans who are still upset over the fact that Game of Thrones is expected to come to an end after season eight in 2018 have a new glimmer of hope after news has broken that a spinoff series for the popular show is even closer to being worked out with HBO.

According to a report, despite David Benioff and D.B. White not really ever bringing up the possibility that they would helm a new series set in the same universe, HBO CEO Richard Plepner has confirmed that a spin-off is looking extremely more likely as time wears on.

"There might be some brand extension that would be exciting," he said. "It certainly has not escaped the producers."

However, he also admitted that right now, the focus is still mainly on finishing out the current series as strong as ever and giving it the ending it deserves, though it definitely didn't mean that a sequel or spinoff wasn't still being considered.

"Right now we're focused on finishing the series with the kind of energy and excitement that everyone has come to expect. We're going to do that while at the same time parallel processing very embryonic stages of other possibilities," he added.

In the meantime, fans will have to continue waiting to find out more details on how the series will continue panning out over the next two seasons, which have been confirmed to be two shorter ones. Season seven, which will premiere in summer 2017, will be seven episodes, while season eight will only feature six episodes.
