Dancing With The Stars had close score averages going into the final week of competition. Zendaya Coleman and Val Chmerkovskiy were leading in first place with an average of 26.8 for the previous nine weeks.

The duo had to compete in three dances for the first segment of the season finale. First up for Zendaya and Val was Samba. As they took the floor, Derek was in black head to toe while his red armband complimented Zendaya's outfit. Despite having accidently cut Derek's face during an earlier practice, Zendaya stayed calm throughout the performance. Len Goodman hailed the dance as an "eye-popping, show-stopping, [and] jaw-dropping" achievement. Meanwhile Bruno Tonioli congratulated their natural flamboyancy and technique. The routine rewarded the pair with 10s across the board for a perfect 30.

The second piece of the evening's competition was the Cha Cha Cha relay. In this dance, each couple was assigned to dance a different segment of the same song. Scoring ranged from 5 points for the pair who came in first to 2 points for the ones who came in fourth. Zendaya and Val drew the fourth performance slot. The pair came in first and received 5 points.

Last came the much-anticipated freestyle dance. Competitors were free to chose whatever style and music they so desired. The pair started with the cha cha and moved into a more hip-hop inspired number aided by some young dancers. Set to "Beauty and the Beat" by Justin Bieber, the song showcased not only Zendaya's dance moves but also her status as a teenage role model. Len was impressed with how the disparate elements came together as a whole. The duo received 10s across the board.
