Adam Levine is receiving a lot of backlash for a certain comment he made on Tuesday night's episode of The Voice.

The controversy began after Judith Hill, the former Michael Jackson backup singer, and Sarah Simmons were voted off the competition during the results show. Both had Levine as their coach.

After the vote, Levine was heard muttering the words "I hate this country" into his hot microphone. Following his remark, Twitter users went on a rampage and attacked the singer for his statement.

"I think @adamlevine saying "I hate this country" was completely unnecessary," wrote one Twitter user the same day as the results show.

"Adam Levine just said "I hate this country" on TV ... Not a smart move dude, not smart at all. #america," tweeted another.

Still, The Voice coach had his own words to say right back. "Joke," he wrote on Twitter the same day as the results show. "Something said or done to provoke laughter or cause amusement, as a witticism, a short and amusing anecdote, or prankish act."

He also implied that the angry tweeters were "humorless."

That was followed by another definition, this time for the word "misunderstand." "To fail to understand," he tweeted. "To interpret incorrectly."

Despite this controversy, Levine does have one thing to be happy about. He has Amber Carrington, his one last contestant from his team, still in the competition. The rest of the remaining contestants are Michelle Chamuel from Usher's team, Sasha Allen from Shakira's squad and Blake Shelton's Danielle Bradbery, The Swon Brothers and Holly Tucker.

Levine's comment can be heard in the video below at the 1:14 mark.
