In related news, executive producers Jon Steinberg and Robert Levine got candid about the shocking death on "Black Sails," Collider claims. The former said that it was gross and there is not anything as disturbing coming ahead. However, he did agree that the death scene needed to be a spectacle so that it could add to the legend of Blackbeard.

As for the practice, Ray Stevenson went through to enact the scene, he agreed that the actor dealt with a lot of make-up and crazy stuff. He was particular about respecting the historical record and cooperated completely as he sat in the chair wearing prosthetics for hours. Robert Levine said that the "Black Sails" scene was an elaborate sequence and it took many days to shoot. Since keelhauling was never followed through, it was a challenge to figure out a way to film it well, which they did.

The idea was to create a visual and dramatic effect which they succeeded in. "Black Sails" Season 4 Episode 4 airs on Feb. 19 on Starz.
