'The Blacklist: Redemption' Spoilers: Premiere Episode Review; Showrunner Explains Why Tom Keen Had To Leave [VIDEO]
With NBC network's crime drama thriller series, The Blacklist, out for an eight-week hiatus, its spin-off series, The Blacklist: Redemption is taking over its timeslot. Fans saw familiar faces from the original series, but some events on the spin-off were reportedly not expected to happen.
The Blacklist: Redemption was officially announced to be in development on May last year. According to TV Line, the spin-off series is supposed to show Ryan Eggold's character, Tom Keen, as the main protagonist skilled operator, with Famke Janssen as Susan "Scottie" Hargrave, his mother who leads a mercenary organization.
The big story line surrounding the two characters on The Blacklist: Redemption is Scottie is Tom's mother, but they continue to work with each other without Scottie knowing the real relationship she has with Tom. As it can be recalled, the revelation has it that Tom Keen was originally born as Christopher Hargrave, but when he disappeared from their home when he was still young, he was never found since. That was why he was assumed dead by his original family.
On the premiere episode of The Blacklist: Redemption, Tom found out that his father was still alive and was the one who enlisted Tom to work with his mother. The two tracked down a lost victim, a CIA agent, who was kidnapped.
According to Variety, it is likely to happen that one of the episodes for "The Blacklist: Redemption" will finally let Scottie know that Tom is her long lost son. It is speculated to happen on the final moments of the spin-off series, mainly because she seem to have no single idea about it for now.
Meanwhile, series creator Jon Bokenkamp, revealed in an Entertainment Weekly interview the reason behind Tom's exit from The Blacklist and a transfer to The Blacklist: Redemption. Bokenkamp said that Tom had to leave his wife, Liz (Megan Boone) and their child because he had to go on a mission not just to find blacklisters but to find out about his history as well.
As it can be remembered on The Blacklist, Tom has a lot of never-ending questions about where he came from. That includes the question on why his family would assume he was dead and who told them he was dead in the first place. These are also some of the expected revelations that are likely happening on the spin-off.
