The character Bob Benson was first introduced in season 6, as he sycophantically handed Don Draper a coffee in the elevator. Now it looks like he will become a more entrenched character since he's been spending time with Joan.

Much like Ken Cosgrove, fans of the show have been feeling suspicious about the character.

He's already given a few contradictory responses to some of the other characters. At Roger's mother's wake he sent a "royal spread," saying he thought about his dead father -- only to tell Pete about a nurse "[who's] available now only because he's brought my father back to full health."

And he's quick with a lie: remember when he got Joan to the head of the queue at the hospital?

New York Magazine's Vulture blog compiled some of the internet fandom's best theories about the character. Some Reddit users were convinced he is some kind of government spy.

"I think he's a G man," began one thread. "The FBI was worried about espionage and there is a war and Dow Chemical is a client, and SCDP has done political work. It wouldn't be a stretch at all. He's trying too hard to get close to them. He's not writing copy or submitting art. He's not bucking for a position. He's sucking up and gifting."

His creepy demeanor was also considered a factor into the latest conspiracy theory, that Megan could meet an untimely end because she was dressed like Sharon Tate.

However, it was still home to a few absurd ones: it's very unlikely Benson will prove to be a time-traveling Bobby Draper or the smoke monster from Lost.

Rolling Stone also published responses tagged with #WhoIsBobBenson; many reiterated the murder them and suspected Benson had "an eerie, disquieting, Norman Batesian politeness that wigs me out," and a "Future Scranton Strangler," in reference to The Office.

A few left no speculations as to his character, and merely complimented the shorts he wore last episode.

Another author, Jaime Woo of Huffington Post Gay Voices, suggested that Bob Benson is that character that's going to take us all the way to Stonewall.

As Woo mentions in his article, bloggers Tom and Lorenzo at TomAndLorenzo.com have suggested the character might be gay: he seemed to show a lack of interest at the whorehouse with Pete, and them, this interactions with Joan read a bit asexual.

Woo believes this could explain the mistrust the other male characters have of him.

"There's an underlying fear that he's an impostor, someone trying to sneak his way in," Woo wrote.

"The show hasn't really dealt with gay issues since art director Sal's departure in Season 3," he continued, "and because I don't expect Sal to return in a Burt Peterson/Duck Phillips kind of way, I'm betting on Bob to somehow put a face to the Stonewall riot, even if he's not in it directly."
