After donning the role of the Doctor since 2010, actor Matt Smith is now reportedly leaving the program after he completes his obligations for the Doctor Who Christmas special.
The stunning news, which will surely be detrimental to the fans of the popular British TV series, was recently released by the BBC's Doctor Who blog.
Smith took the time to thank all of his fans for their ongoing support and their incredible work ethics they've put on display throughout the years.
"Doctor Who has been the most brilliant experience for me as an actor and a bloke, and that largely is down to the cast, crew and fans of the show. I'm incredibly grateful to all the cast and crew who work tirelessly every day, to realize all the elements of the show and deliver Doctor Who to the audience. Many of them have become good friends and I'm incredibly proud of what we achieved over the last four years," he said.
Smith also paid homage to his fellow actors and actresses for their work alongside him.
"It's been an honour to play this part, to follow the legacy of brilliant actors, and helm the TARDIS for a spell with 'the ginger, the nose and the impossible one.' But when ya gotta go, ya gotta go and Trenzalore calls. Thank you guys," he added.
With Smith being the lead of the program, the actor's departure will almost certainly leave the creative brass with big shoes to fill. Only time will truly tell how
No official airdate has yet to be announced for Season 8 of Doctor Who. However, the 50th anniversary special will be airing on November 23, which will be followed by the Christmas special.
