Although Vampire Diaries' standouts Ian Somerhalder (Damon) and Nina Dobrev (Elena) have called in quits in the romance department, fans are still surely curious if their characters will experience that same fate on The CW television series.

Fortunately for TVP loyalists, executive producer Julie Plec, who has been notorious for dishing out hints on the program's future episodes, was recently on hand at the ATX Television Festival in Austin, and addressed the largely popular topic.

According to Wet Paint, the audience will reportedly see Damon and Elena as an item once again, and in a "new relationship" while "trying to make it work," stated Plec.

Although fans will undoubtedly be obliged to learn that the creative brass will be moving forward with the Damon-Elena reconciliation, the EP gave a fair warning that a "villain in their midst they don't know is a villain at the beginning," could very well ruin their newfound happiness.

Although no official airdate has yet to be announced, Vampire Diaries Season 5 is slated to begin at some point in September. Its spin-off series, The Originals, is set to start up again at some in October.
