Netflix's 'Dark' Is A Darker, Weirder TV Series You Will Binge On
Netflix just released its new series, Dark, which centers on the search for a missing child. The new original show is also being likened to Netflix's other big hit, Stranger Things, only it is dubbed as "darker."
The streaming site's first original German series was created and directed by Baran bo Odar. All 10 episodes were written by Jantje Friese. Dark is being compared to Stranger Things because of its supernatural theme. The show also serves as a thrilling saga that's tailor-made for fans of Stranger Things.
'Dark' Synopsis
Dark is set in a small rural town of Winden in the 1980s, where majority of the residents have gone in search for an 11-year-old boy named Mikkel (Daan Lennard Liebrenz). It opened with a man named Michael Kahnwald (Sebastian Rudolph) writing a letter that shouldn't be opened before Nov. 4, 2019 at 10:13 p.m.
After taking his own life by hanging, Michael's son, Jonas (Louis Hofmann), became extremely affected by his dad's demise. He found it difficult to return to school after months of distancing himself from his peers.
While he was away, Jonas' best friend, Bartosz (Paul Lux), spread lies about him, and he also dated Jonas' summer fling, Martha (Lisa Vicari).
However, none of Jonas' problems compared to Ulrich's (Oliver Masucci) woes. While investigating the disappearance of Erik Obendorf's (Paul Radom), the detective learned that his son, Mikkel, had also gone missing.
Several years ago, Ulrich's brother, Mads (Valentin Oppermann), also disappeared without a trace.
Mikkel's disappearance sent the entire town into panic since they have no idea where their neighbors have gone. However, some chilling speculations have been going around town.
Majority of the characters in Dark held secrets that were linked to the abductions. Infidelity, lies and deception were very much part of the 10-episode show. For instance, it was revealed that Michael's wife, Hannah (Maja Schone), had an affair with Ulrich. This became a motive in Mikkel's shocking disappearance.
Helge (Hermann Beyer), an elderly man who kept escaping from the nursing home, also predicted that what happened several years ago will happen again.
Several other characters who played a crucial role in Dark included H.G. Tannhaus (Christian Steyer), a clockmaker, Noah (Mark Waschke), a priest and Charlotte (Karoline Eichhorn), a police chief.
'Dark' Season 2 Renewal
As of late, it is still unclear if Netflix will pick up the freshman series for a second season. However, since episode 10 ended with a major cliffhanger, it's possible that fans would demand for more installments.
