To the excitement of its many fans, CW's The Vampire Diaries has officially returned to set to begin the filming of its fifth season, as several members of its cast and crew made the announcement that the production process is now full steam ahead.

Enthusiastic to be back on the VD set, executive producer Julie Plec took to Twitter to confirm that the cast and crew have started the production process.

"The day has arrived: it's TVDS5. First day of shooting - mad love to all my Atlanta folk. See you guys in a few days," she tweeted.

Ian Somerhalder, who plays the role of Damon, also posted on the social networking site to give his Mystic Falls co-workers shoutout.

"1st day of shooting season 5 of The Vampire Diaries- break a leg today everyone! It's HOT, no doubt welcome home to Mystic Falls people!"

The CW's Vampire Diaries is slated to launch Season 5 on Thursday, October 10. Its spin-off series, The Originals, is set to begin its first season on Tuesday, October 15.
