Talia Joy Castellano, the 13-year-old makeup artist who appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, died Tuesday after a long battle with cancer.

Talia was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, an aggressive brain cancer, at only 7 years old. She became an Internet sensation in 2012 through her makeup videos and got invited to be on The Ellen DeGeneres Show to share her story and show off her makeup skills.

Ellen DeGeneres tweeted about Talia's passing on Tuesday, writing, "This year I met a very special girl, and today we lost her. Sending my heart to Talia's family. I'm so sad."

Talia's mother, Desiree Castellano and sister Mattia appeared in an interview with the TODAY show Wednesday morning to share their thoughts. "She was funny, caring, inspirational, talented - very talented," Desiree said of Talia.

"She loved every single one of her fans," Mattia added, "and she always wanted to give back to them."

Talia voiced her desire to be on The Ellen DeGeneres Show with her fans, who started a grassroots movement to get her on the show. When she met DeGeneres in her September 2012 talk show appearance, Talia explained that a little fishy once told her to "just keep swimming," in references to DeGeneres' character in Finding Nemo. She said that that's what has kept her from being depressed about her diagnosis.

"You really are quite something," DeGeneres told her in the interview. "There's a depth to your soul that is not a 13-year-old soul. You're an old soul, and you are very special and amazing, and I'm so honored that you wanted to meet me and that I got to meet you."

Thousands of Talia's fans have posted their condolences on Twitter and Facebook since the news of her death broke. Ryan Seacrest posted a photo of Talia on his Instagram with the caption, "I only met you once, but your memory is strong and your light will shine on."
