Still The Reigning King Of SNL - Here's Eleven Photos That Remind Us Why Eddie Murphy Was The GOAT
We had to do one more Gumby pic - He's Gumby, dammit!
In this one, kids gather around Eddie Murphy performing as Gumby in a Christmas skit on Saturday Night Live.

More of Eddie Murphy and Stevie Wonder! Another of Murphy's recurring characters was Dion, an incredibly flamboyant gay SNL hairstylist who always knew exactly what his client needed. (Our only question is: Where's Blair?)

He also played an adult version of the character Buckwheat from the Little Rascals, talking to Alfalfa (played by Mary Gross.) This was one of his first popular characters on the show.

And yes, they always had Weekend Update too - here Eddie Murphy is as a very early guest talking about how the Ken doll is 'alone now' and how Barbie should leave him for G.I. Joe. (Terrible take, Eddie, but it was the 80s and you're Eddie Murphy, so you're forgiven.)

And SNL has always been famous for their political sketches - in this one, Eddie Murphy played Archbishiop Desmond Tutu on a talk show - who accidentally breaks his fellow guest's Heisman Trophy and tries desperately to put it back together before anyone notices, to hilarious results.

American musician Stevie Wonder (center) appears on an episode of 'Saturday Night Live' with comedians Joe Piscopo (left) and Eddie Murphy (right, and dressed as Stevie Wonder), New York, New York, May 6, 1983.

In another weird sketch about the spread of Herpes, Murphy plays a herpes father who is late coming home from a big battle with the white blood cells to his herpes wife and herpes son.

Another of Murphy's recurring characters Mister Robinson, from his recurring sketch 'Mister Robinson's Neighborhood.' He was like Mister Rogers - if Mister Rogers was an ex-con. Here he is playing Santa Claus.

Here he is playing Gumby - the beloved children's character from the 50s to the 80s - in a sketch with the great Martin Short. Gumby was one of Eddie Murphy's recurring characters on the show - and one of his most famous, at that.

There's been a lot of debate online today about who was the best SNL cast member of all time - and by debate, we mean it was younger people saying Kate McKinnon and being clapped back into yesteryear by a thousand people reminding them Eddie Murphy saved the show.
He did, too - here he is with the 1981 cast of Saturday Night Live, where he reigned as king until 1984.
