The newest hit Netflix series has us asking two important questions: 'Is It Cake?' and 'Why are we OBSESSED with this show?'

For those who have not been keeping up with the recent phenomenon, Is It Cake? is a show hosted by Saturday Night Live star Mikey Day. In the show, bakers make cakes that look like real-life items, that are expressly not cakes, while a panel takes their best guesses about which items are cake and which are not.

It is a beautifully, wonderfully, meaningless show, and it has us all absolutely glued to our screens. It is second in hours viewed only to Bridgerton.

Why?

Well, for starters, hyper-realistic caskes became a mega-phenomenon on TikTok. Their combination of mind-blowing ability, alongside the immensely satisfying sight of cake being cut into, proved over the past few years that these costumed cakes are captivating in and of themselves.

The thing that takes it from a TikTok attention grabber to a sensational Netflix series, though? That's Mikey Day.

The SNL star's whimsy and personality is what truly makes this show special. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Mikey Day revealed that part of the wonder the host creates when he invites us to share in watching the show comes from his own amazement:

"I was kind of neutral on baking. I definitely made it clear that I know nothing about it and I knew even more-nothing about this sub-niche of hyper-realistic cakes. Like, I had no idea what fondant was. So [the viewer] learns about it with me. I definitely came out of it with a profound respect right for the art of it. They're magicians in a way."

There are so few things in the world today that are allowed to be exclusively fun, and this is one of them: Day sees to that with his entertaining and upbeat hosting style. He continuously seeks to make it fun (and he succeeds)! In fact, the fun was assured when he took on the job.

"The producers were very vocal in saying, 'Make it your own, have fun with it.' They were very aware of the fun nature of the show. I mean, it's called Is It Cake? So it was good to hear the show was structured like the title. But it also treats the artistry side very respectfully and you see a glimpse into how these bakers create these insane cakes."

We can't wait to see what else they manage to turn into cake!
