'Grey's Anatomy' Season 10 Spoilers: Owen & Cristina Breakup Remains Through Premiere & One Star Leaves the Show?
Grey's Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes hinted that season 10 may be the last for one of the show's original characters, even central figure Meredith Grey.
If one of the stars leave the show, Rhimes said the news will come soon.
"Last time they kept me guessing up until almost the last minute, which was really stressful. This time I asked to know much sooner, so that we could plan for it," she said, according to Perez Hilton. "If one of the originals is going to be leaving I want to give them the beautiful exit they deserve. I don't want to be kept guessing about what's going to happen."
Season 10 opens up immediately following the events that unfolded in the finale, which also featured a superstorm. Cristina Yang (played by Sandra Oh) asked Owen (Kevin McKidd) if a life with her without any children would be enough for him, after he bonded with young Ethan and given her desire to not have children. She ultimately decided for him that she would never be enough, and Cristina walked away from the relationship.
McKidd told TV Line that Owen and Cristina are still apart "definitely through the premiere, and maybe longer. It looks like it could be quite a bit longer."
"The problem they have is they really kind of are the loves of each other's lives," McKidd added, "but they have fundamental, opposing, strong beliefs. So is one of them going to back down? I don't know."
Though McKidd said "they might spend a lot of [season 10] broken up," he elaborated that Owen will not let Cristina walk away from the relationship so easily. Cristina may have given up hope but "he's not quite there yet," the actor said of his character. He also hinted that Cristina may still have feelings brewing for Owen, even though she may try to hide them.
"The problem is she's not really 'checked out' [of the romance]," McKidd said. "She tries to make herself checked out, but even through the two-hour opener you can tell that the attraction between the two of them is never going to go away. There's always going to be this magnetism."
"I know the Cristina/Owen fans will be like, 'Oh my god, that means it's over!' But no, they're still working in the same hospital, they're still go to be constantly in each other lives," he added. "And they're such an odd couple... I think in a weird way they might find a way to make not being in a relationship work for them."
