'Revenge' Season 3 Spoilers: Aiden Returns to Emily & is Sleeping with the Enemy, Barry Sloane Talks
Aiden Mathis returns to the Hamptons in season 3 of Revenge and plays a large role - once again - in Emily Thorne's life, but also with her enemies.
Season 3 ended with a series of scenes that included Daniel Grayson and Aiden fighting at Emily's house, and Aiden walking away from his relationship with Emily after he criticized her for only caring about her plot of revenge against the Grayson family. With all that went on, Aiden will be once again be a prominent figure in season 3 of the ABC series when it airs the fall, actor Barry Sloane told Wetpaint Entertainment Sunday.
'Revenge' Season 3 Premiere Includes Emily in a Wedding Dress & Grayson Family Stripped of Wealth
Speaking of story arcs for the new season, Sloane said of his character, "the main theme from what I'm hearing and what we look to be doing is where do his loyalties lie? He's going to kind of be in bed with the enemy a lot."
The United Kingdom native did not name names but fans know Mathis' "enemies" include the Grayson family because of his allegiance to Emily and The Initiative, the latter of which he held responsible for the death of his sister. Aiden will get drawn into the dark side "quite easily" and much of it follows the shift in his character in the season 3 finale, Sloane said. Aiden went against Emily's wishes and nearly jeopardized her entire plotting by almost telling Daniel her true identity and her true motives for getting close to the Graysons.
"A lot of things I tried to play last season was, as well as playing her lover, I also played a father figure... I think it enabled the viewers to see a different side of Emily," he said. "Emily opened up to him. The viewers opened up to him, and I think because we don't know enough about him, and I think because he's still a grey area, he could be swayed to either side."
Aiden may have betrayed Emily in some ways, but "he loves her, deeply," Sloane told the website aboutf the character dynamic between the lovers.
"I think that's the thing that's between those two. There's such a great chemistry between them. You don't know whether they want to fight each other or . . . each other," he added. "So more of that, I think. I think that's what's exciting about them."
Speaking specifically about the season 3 premiere, Sloane revealed that fans will see Aiden appear "in a place that you don't expect to see him, and a place that nobody expects to see him."
Revenge season 3 premieres Sept. 29 on ABC at its regular time, Sunday nights at 9 p.m., ET/PT
