While the fifth season of The CW's hit TV series, Vampire Diaries, kicking off with a rekindled romance between the likes of Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena (Nina Dobrev), it now appears to be a strong possibility that the latter may be getting a new love interest down the line.

According to E! Online, Melrose Place's Shaun Sipos has been attached in a recurring character capacity for its upcoming installment.

Sipos will don the role of Aaron, someone who attends the college to get away from his painful past. It's at the institution that he runs into Elena, and the two are said to become close over their common family tragedies.

The site also stated that it's feasible that the actor will be sticking around a lot longer than a couple episodes.

While the latet news seems to put a damper on Elena's current relationship with Damon, creator Julie Plec vowed that the writers intend to keep the rekindled couple together for now.

"We'll see how well we do with that," she said.

The CW's Vampire Diaries is slated to air its fifth season on Thursday, October 10. Its spin-off series, The Originals, its spinoff series, will begin its first season on Tuesday, October 15.
