'Glee' Season 5 Spoilers: Phoebe Strole to Play Sam's New Love Interest & New 'Theatrical' Character Details [VIDEO]
Two new characters are being developed to play significant roles in season 5 of Glee.
Phoebe Strole, who was in the original Broadway run of Spring Awakening with Lea Michele, and guest star Jonathan Groff will join the cast of Glee in season 5, according to a Friday report by Deadline. Strole will play Penny Owen, a college sophomore with an interest in nursing who becomes Sam's (Chord Overstreet) new love interest. It is unknown as to when Strole will appear and how long her run on the show will last.
Michele tweeted her excitement about the news Thursday night.
"Such amazing news that two of my very best friends are going to be on #Glee this year!" Michele tweeted. "@ddlovato & @PhoebeStrole! Thank you @MrRPMurphy! ❤"
Producers are also looking to cast for the "big and bold" role of Rodrick Easton, an egotistical theatrical man according to a Thursday report by TVLine. The character will be appearing throughout the season.

The Penny and Rodrick characters are just two of the many guest stars that will appear in the upcoming season. Enstars previously reported that pop star Demi Lovato has been cast for a recurring role in season 5 as Dani, a struggling artist living in New York City. Reality star NeNe Leakes will be returning for season 5 as Coach Roz.
Season 5 of Glee is scheduled to premiere on Thursday, Sept. 26 at 9 p.m. on Fox. The first episode -- titled Love, Love, Love -- will feature primarily music from The Beatles.
