True Blood star, Stephen Moyer, has been cast in NBC's live holiday production of the Sound of Music, the television network announced on Friday.

Moyer will play the role of Capt. Georg Von Trapp, co-starring with Carrie Underwood, who will portray Maria Rainer. Von Trapp is a World War I hero and single father, living in Austria on the cusp of WWII. He hires a governess, Maria Rainer, to take care of his children. The musical follows the romantic relationship that gradually develops between Von Trapp and Rainer, and eventually triumphs all obstacles that come in its way.

The three-hour production is based on the original 1959 Broadway production of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical. Mary Martin and Theodore Bikel portrayed the roles of Rainer and Von Trapp in the original. The play won the Tony Award for best musical. Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer starred in the 1965 film adapatation which won five Academy Awards.

This production comes from Universal TV and is executive produced by Neil Meron and Craig Zadan, and co-directed by Beth McCarthy-Miller and Rob Ashford.

The musical is scheduled to air on Dec. 5.

Moyer just wrapped a three-night July run of the musical production of Chicago at the Hollywood Bowl. Moyer played the role of the lawyer, Billy Flynn.

Moyer has a strong background in theater, he has worked with the Pond at the National Theatre of Wales, the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Oxford Stage Company, and the Young Vic, in the past.
