'Survivor: Blood vs. Water' Spoilers: Jeff Probst Explains Day Zero Twist & Redemption Island [VIDEO]
Survivor host Jeff Probst discussed one of the twists that will be featuring in the reality show's upcoming season.
Survivor's 27th season, subtitled Blood vs. Water, will feature 10 returning players competing with one of their relatives. Before the game truly begins each of the pairs will rough it out in the jungle for a night in their own isolated location. This twist will be called Day Zero.
Probst explained the Day Zero twist in a Tuesday report with Entertainment Weekly, revealing why he and the producers decided to add the factor into the show.
"Day Zero was [Survivor producer] Mark Burnett's idea," Probst revealed. "And how it came was we pitched Mark and said we would like to use Redemption Island. We'd like to introduce Redemption Island right out of the gate by voting two people out of the game and sending them to Redemption, and Mark said 'It just feels really cruel.'"
Redemption Island was a twist used in Survivor's 22nd and 23rd seasons, featuring voted out players dueling for a chance to get back in the game. The twist has returned for Blood vs. Water and will start right away with one player from each tribe getting voted out on Day 1, after which they will head to Redemption Island.
Probst said that the reason they went with the Day Zero twist is because it could convince the pairs that they would be working together through the game. This will change, however, since the tribes will be split into all returning players vs. all loved ones.
The official cast list was released on Aug. 21, which includes the return of such popular players as Rupert Boneham, Tina Wesson and Tyson Apostol. Read the full cast list here.
Survivor: Blood vs. Water premieres on Wednesday, Sept. 18 at 8 p.m. on CBS.
