'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' Premiere Preview; Flashbacks Show Peralta Solving Mystery About Holt's Sexuality [VIDEO]
The Andy Samberg cop comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine premieres on Tuesday on Fox.
Here's what you can expect from the pilot episode.
The show also doubles up as a workplace comedy, set in a police precinct. The ensemble cast features Samberg as detective Jake Peralta, Andre Braugher as the team's captain Ray Holt, Melissa Fumero as Peralta's fellow detective Amy Santiago (who competes with Peralta for the most number of arrests), Terry Crews as gun-shy sergeant Terry Jeffords, Stephanie Beatriz as detective Rosa Diaz, Joe Lo Truglio as detective Charles Boyle, and Chelsea Peretti as Gina Linetti, a civilian administrator.
The pilot revolves around a murder case that the team is trying to crack and is interspersed with carious 30-Rock styles flashbacks, serving to fill in the blanks or just cushioning a joke. In one of the flashbacks, Peralta solves the mystery of Holt's sexuality.
Holt is openly gay, Diaz is a bit of a tough-ass, Boyle is a goofball, and Jeffords is a former NFL player and tough guy who has softened-up after the birth of his daughters.
Samberg previously described his character as a "comedy McNulty," referring to The Wire's protagonist portrayed by Dominic West, but "instead of drinking and philandering, he would do gags in the office."
"Jake is a little bit of a wild card, he is a real good cop, a little bit immature, maybe a little rambunctious, maybe a little sarcastic, doesn't like authority too much," he added.
"She's unafraid to say what's on her mind and she's kind of in her own little world," Peretti spoke about her character Gina to Mercury News. "Often in an office situation, people suppress their feelings. But she gets to be a little absurd, and it's fun to let the air out of the room."
While answering if she could be friends with her character, Fumero described Amy in an interview with Paper magazine:
"Amy would probably get on my nerves as a friend because she's a little Type-A and a bit high-strung. I'm more laid-back, but I'd be friends with her because she'd be fun to mess with. She'd probably be a great friend, though, someone really loyal who always shows up when you need her."
The show comes from writers and producers Michael Schur and Dan Goor of Parks and Recreation. Dean Winters (30 Rock, The Oz, and Rescue Me) and rapper Kid Cudi will be guest starring on the show. Saturday Night Live star Fred Armisen makes a cameo in the pilot episode of the show.
The show premieres Sept. 17 at 8:30 p.m. ET on Fox.
