While there's been a slew of chatter regarding the dismal future of the rekindled relationship between Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena (Nina Dobrev) in season 5 of The Vampire Diaries, the two appeared quite romantic in the latest photo.

TVD director Joshua Butler shared the latest image on Twitter, which shows the onscreen couple getting hot and heavy.

In a fuzzy closeup, Damon and Elena could be seen about to lock lips with their faces mere inches apart

Being that Elena is off to college at Whitmore, there's been a lot of talk stating that the two will mostly be involved in a long distance relationship via phone.

"That magic moment after a kiss when you decide that one is not enough," he tweeted.

TV Guide recently put up an exclusive photo of the principal cast members. In it, Elena could be seen in a red, see-through skirt amid the rest of the principal cast, who are all sporting black. Interestingly enough, she's also turning in the opposite direction of Damon.

"This season, we're really going back to what we had in season 1, which is what sucked everyone in to begin with," Somerhalder explained from the Atlanta set.

The CW's Vampire Diaries will be launching season 5 on Thursday, October 10. Its spin-off series, The Originals,will begin its first season on Tuesday, October 15.
