Titled Survivor: Blood vs. Water, the 27th season of the reality show kicked off Wednesday night with a whole new set of twists.

The series brought back 10 former castaways along with one of their loved ones. Starting the season on Day Zero, the returnees and their partner were sent off to their own locations as they weathered the night alone. However, when host Jeff Probst officially welcomed them the next morning, the duos found out that they would, in fact, be separated.

Soon the returning castaways - Aras Baskauskas, Colton Cumbie, Kat Edorsson, Tina Wesson, Monica Culpepper, Candice, Gervase Peterson, Laura Morett, Rupert Boneham, and Tyson Apostol- were settled into their own tribe, the Galang.

The newbies - Vytas Baskauskas, John, Caleb Bankston, Marissa Peterson, Hayden Moss, Ciera Eastin, Brad Culpepper, Laura Boneham, Katie Collins, and Rachel Foulger - gathered together to form the Tadhana tribe.

However, both tribes were immediately set the task of voting a member out. The Tadhanas went for Laura B., Rupert's wife, while the Galang voted for Candice. Viewers were initially led to believe that this would be the end for the two players but it was soon revealed that Redemption Island was in play to give the ousted competitors a chance to win their way back in.

But the surprises didn't stop there. The removed players' loved ones were then given a chance to swap places. If they chose to take this option, which Rupert did, then their loved one would take their place in the opposite tribe. As Rupert and Candice headed for Redemption Island, Laura B. moved over to the Galang.

The competitor's first immunity challenge had high stakes - a chance to receive fire-starting flint. This made the task extremely urgent for the Tadhana tribe since they had yet to create so much as a spark. To win, the teams had to make it over an obstacle course, capture a boat, paddle back to shore, and then complete a puzzle in order to raise their flag.

Unfortunately for the Tadhana, the Galang beat them in the puzzle challenge by a mile, sending their loved ones to Tribal Council for the first time. Unfortunately for Marissa, her uncle's gloating when his tribe won the first challenge did not go over well with her own tribe members and she was voted off. Perhaps she will get her revenge on Redemption Island.

However, in a lucky twist for the Tadhana, although they are now two members down, they did receive flint as compensation for going to Tribal Council.
