The much anticipated season premiere of NCIS: Los Angeles is finally upon us.

The CBS drama ended their season 4 finale with cliffhangers across the board, leaving fans anxiously biting their nails all summer. Now that the show is back, however, don't expect the storylines to be quickly wrapped up and tied with a nice little bow.

Instead, series creator Shane Brennan intends to keep viewers on the edge of their seat through the twists and turns of tonight's "Ascension," the events of which will send major ripples spreading through the entire season.

While the clock ticks down to 9 p.m. ET, here are a few hints as to what's in store for the Los Angeles team in the premiere.

The Rescue of Sam and Deeks

When the credits rolled on last spring's "Descent," Agent Sam Hanna (LL Cool J) and LAPD Detective Marty Deeks (Eric Christian Olsen) were being tortured for information regarding Sam's wife, Michelle (Aunjanue Ellis). Picking directly where the finale left off, the premiere will see the duo under the control of Sidorov (Timothy V. Murphy) for at least seven hours, according to a recent interview with Olsen.

"If you think that [Deeks torture] was the big moment in this story arc, it wasn't. There's something bigger to come," Brennan said, according to TV Guide. "The opening episode is very, very traumatic for both Sam and for Deeks. ... Post-traumatic stress is something that happens after the event, sometimes a long time after the event.

Look for both captives to be shot before the episode ends.

Callen and The Chameleon

Agent Callen (Chris O'Donnell) made a gamble when he brought his old nemesis back into the fold in order to track down two rough nuclear weapons. When Marcel Janvier (Christopher Lambert) subsequently betrayed the NCIS team, Callen was left feeling responsible.

"Callen knows that there will be a final confrontation, and only one of them will walk away," Brennan said earlier this summer, according to TV Guide.

TV Guide also recently reveled that either Siderov or Janvier will die by the end of the episode. What we do know for certain is that The Chameleon will be on the run in a mall during the premiere. Check out Instagram user Justanik's footage of filming for the upcoming chase below.

Deeks and Kensi

Before Deeks found himself captured and tortured, the LAPD liaison summoned the courage to kiss his partner in a culmination of three seasons of sexual tension. Unfortunately, things will not progress smoothly for Deeks and Kensi (Daniela Ruah).

"As a consequence of both the kiss and what happened to Deeks in the finale and what happens to him in the opening episode, their relationship goes to a new level," Brennan told TV Line. "It continues at that pitch right through the season and then takes a most unexpected turn at the back end of the season. It takes a very, very interesting turn. I mean, really interesting."

However, Deeks must first deal with his recently acquired emotional trauma, a heavy weight that will drag him down throughout the season.
