One of the celebrities on Dancing With the Stars season 17 has been injured and may be at risk of needing surgery.

Television personality Bill Nye "the Science Guy" injured his knee during his dance with partner Tyne Stecklein in Monday night's show, according to E! News Tuesday. The injury may even require emergency surgery in order for Nye to continue in the competition.

"We can confirm Bill Nye was injured during his performance last night and is currently seeking medical attention," an ABC representative told E! News. "We will continue to keep you posted on his progress."

Dressed up like Ludwig van Beethoven, Nye danced the Paso Doble in Monday night's show to the composer's Fifth Symphony. The judges scored him 17 out of 30, an uptick from his premiere score of 14 out of 30.

Since being on the show, Nye has become a fan favorite on the Internet with his two dances racking up millions of YouTube hits.

"I mean it's the Cha Cha with a guy in a lab coat. That was a great surprise," Nye said after Monday night's show. "What it says to me that is we are the lowest judges scores by a fantastic factor, but what's keeping us in it is the show, so we are going to keep bringing the show!"

According to Stecklein, she and Nye will be performing the Jive in next Monday's show should they be able to continue. The Science Guy escaped elimination on Monday despite his low scores. Former NFL wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson was the first celebrity eliminated from this year's competition.

The next episode of Dancing With the Stars airs Monday, Sept. 30 at 8 p.m. on ABC featuring a tribute to Hollywood.
