The upcoming season of The Mentalist may be the one Jisbon fans have been waiting for.

Over the last five years, there has been a buildup of sexual tension between Patrick Jane (SimonBaker) and the CBI's Agents Lisbon (Robin Tunney) but little action by the characters to address it. However, during last season's "Red John's Rules," a psychic intimated that the team leader might be a "little in love" with her very perceptive coworker.

As the hunt for Red John winds its way to and end, perhaps Jane and Lisbon will have a little more time to examine and advance their relationship.

"They haven't been thinking about [their growing closeness] while it's been happening, so all this accumulated emotion and feeling has been building up, essentially, behind them," said series creator Bruno Heller, according to TV Line. "It's only when they step away from that and can turn around and look back that they will really start to see how they feel about each other, and it's great fun to explore that on the page. I think it's going to be a whole different look at these two characters."

However, it remains to be seen if the series' upcoming new female lead will create any problems for this retrospection.

The Mentalist returns to CBS on Sept. 29. Get a sneak peek at the pair's season 6 interactions in the premiere scene below.
