John Mayer took a break from his ceaseless touring to stop by Jimmy Kimmel Live and discuss his recent album and his long absence from the music scene.

Although the 35-year-old singer released Paradise Valley in August and debuted Born and Raised last year, Mayer had taken a three-break from the industry as he recuperated from the throat ailment.

After trying rest and surgery to no avail, Mayer found a specialist who seemed to have a solution that involved injecting Botox into the performers vocal chords. However, it was an on the spot procedure that involved putting a needle through Mayer's neck without the benefit of anesthesia.

"The older you get...your moms not there to see you're about to cry and go, 'We'll come back and reschedule that,'" Mayer joked. "The guy stepped out, he said, 'I'll give you a minute to think about it.' I stared at these needle and I just went like, 'This is what I do for a living'...In through the neck, it was very traumatic.'

While recuperating, Mayer decided to head out to a home he had purchased in a small Montana town.

"I was able to really become apart of the community instead of that celebrity who just drops in," the Daughters singer explained. "It's good for me because I can come back to L.A. and be a part of sort of the nonsense but not claim it as my own."

Now that he is back on tour, Mayer has to contend with a slightly distracted audience, courtesy of smartphones and Instagram.

"We just came back from South America and it was like 35,000 people going crazy, shoulder-to-shoulder going crazy," Mayer said of his recent shows. "Then I came back to the states and it was like, we played the same show and people aren't going crazy and I think to myself, 'I'm not playing a very good show.' And I look out and they are going crazy for me but not to me, they're applauding into the phone."

Mayer is on tour through the end of December and will play the Hollywood Bowl this weekend.
