Glee co-creator Ryan Murphy revealed Wednesday night that the next season of the musical series would be its last.

Glee has already been picked up for a sixth season and Murphy confirmed that the season would be an end to the series as a whole. He revealed at a Paley Center event Wednesday night that the final season was meant to revolve around Rachel (Lea Michele) and Finn (the late Cory Monteith), but the latter's untimely death changed things.

"The final year of the show, which will be next year, was designed around Rachel and Cory/Finn's story," Murphy explained to reporters. "I always knew that, I always knew how it would end. I knew what the last shot was - he was in it. I knew what the last line was - she said it to him. So when a tragedy like that happens you sort of have to pause and figure out what you want to do, so we're figuring that out now."

Murphy and company paid tribute to Finn/Monteith in the latest episode of Glee, titled The Quarterback. The episode featured the students, faculty and alumni of McKinley High gathering together to mourn the loss of Finn and celebrate his life.

Though the plans for the final season will need to be changed, Murphy has already developed a new ending.

"I have a good idea," Murphy said. "I'm going to tell the studio and the network [in a week] how after Cory's unfortunate passing we can end the show that I think is very satisfactory. And kind of in his honor, which I love."

Murphy's announcement confirms Fox president Kevin Reilly's comments to reporters in August that he did not anticipate Glee going beyond a sixth season.

Assuming the final season of Glee follows the same schedule as the previous five, the popular musical series will end in May 2015.
