Kerry Washington Pregnant: Actress' Baby Bump on SNL, Cast Jokes About Show's Diversity Issues
Newly pregnant Scandal star Kerry Washington hosted NBC's Saturday Night Live on Nov. 2, becoming the first woman of color to do so since early 2012.
While she stayed mum about her pregnancy, her baby bump was in full force underneath her loose-fitting black dress during her monologue. The show also didn't waste time addressing its diversity problem that's been making headlines since cast member Kenan Thompson said there aren't enough Black females on the show.
Washington's first role of the night was Michelle Obama, opposite Jay Pharoah who played President Obama.
He joked, "Michelle, this is such a treat. I feel like it's been years since I've seen you!" (Maya Rudolph was the last person who portrayed Mrs. Obama back in 2007)
When Washington left the scene to go get changed because "Oprah Winfrey" had just arrived, SNL shared this message with viewers:
"The producers at Saturday Night Live would like to apologize to Kerry Washington for the number of black women she will be asked to play tonight. We made these requests both because Ms. Washington is an actress of considerable range and talent and also becauseSNL does not currently have a black woman in the cast. As for the latter reason, we agree this is not an ideal situation and look forward to rectifying it in the near future. Unless of course, we fall in love with another white guy first."
Then, Washington returned as Winfrey and almost did a Beyonce impersonation as well.
Rev. Al Sharpton appeared on the show and said, "What have we learned from this sketch? As usual, nothing."
During her monologue she dished on Scandal and once again joked about diversity in America.
"I am so proud to be on a show that in 2013 has the courage to cast a White man as the President."
