Despite the season 2 death of Moriarty (Andrew Scott), the murky waters for Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) are clearly not 100-percent behind him, as the detective is set to take on a new antagonist in Charles Augustus Magnussen (Lars Mikkelsen) in season 3 of Sherlock.

Writer Steven Moffat dished on the future villain, whom he coins as "terrifying," according to Radio Times.

"You'll know the angle we've taken on Charles Augustus Magnussen within seconds of the episode beginning," he said.

Mikkelsen's character is based off late author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "king of blackmailers" Charles Augustus Milverton. In the story's origins, the anti-hero extorts money from those he victimizes by using threats..

Although Moffat didn't get into the finer details of how closely the small screen's version of the villain will adhere to Milverton, he did confirm Mikkelsen's character's heinous presence amid the near completion of the program's finale season 3 episode.

"It's almost finished, it's almost out of the cutting room. We've drawn from that story [of Charles Augustus Milverton] but, as ever with our show, what we draw and how we do it and how we find equivalences, [you'll have to wait and see]," he said.

Moffatt went on to elaborate that "Sometimes, as you know, we flip things and make them the other way around. We do all those things. I'm not giving away what we've done with him but I think we've done something good."

Sherlock will be making its return to television in the U.S. on Jan. 19 at 10 p.m. Eastern Time. While its U.K. release will be happening sooner, an official date has yet to be announced.
