Phillip Phillips managed to endure the pain from his painful kidney stones throughout the whole competition but now he will have to head back home for surgery.

"Yes, I'll be having it here soon, so I'm getting ready - getting prepared for all that," Phillips said on Live! with Kelly. "So I'm just ready to feel better, feel like myself." He confirmed that his medical situation will keep him from the post-Idol press appearances usually made after the show.
"Because I've been sick this whole show and everything, I'm trying to recover from that and get all my work done. I'm trying to just recover and feel a lot better than I have been," said the 21-year-old singer. "It's been tough, but you know, I've had a lot of great people around me and a lot of great doctors, so that really helped out a lot."
Despite being sick for several months and being advised by doctors to treat his medical problem immediately, Phillips stuck it out in the competition to be crowned the winner of the 11th season of American Idol.
Phillips visited his hometown last week in the run up to the finals, and had been advised by his family doctor to get treated right away - even if it meant dropping out of the show. But Phillips refused to drop out of the show he was so close to winning and agreed to have surgery after the competition.
The American Idol singer is reportedly suffering from severe kidney stones and is worsening. The winner was rushed to the hospital in early March during the competition, with complaints of severe abdominal pain. Sources close to the singer said doctors put a "stent" in his kidney at the time because he had kidney stones that were obstructing the ureter.
Kidney stones are known to be painful but usually can be removed from the body without causing permanent damage.
The singer's illness was one of the reasons why he was not featured in Ford clips shown on American Idol. He was given permission to rest during the exhausting photo shoots.
Despite facing surgery very soon, Phillips said his sickness will not prevent him from joining in on the Idol tour this summer.
