Now that Christmas is over, the residents of Weatherfield are preparing themselves for a 2014 they won't forget-but in some cases, they may just want to pause their lives before the New Year takes hold on Coronation Street.

Hayley (Julie Hesmondhalgh) and Roy (David Neilson) are nervously awaiting the results of her scan to see if she has made any progress in fighting her terminal cancer. Though initially upbeat and even suggesting to Roy that they take a spring holiday together, the doctor's news will soon turn Hayley's mood much more sour. When Roy takes her to a pantomime to take her mind off of the verdict, she will break down in the queue and wind up lashing out at her partner, among others.

The news could mean Hayley needs to prepare to say her goodbyes to her friends and loved ones soon.

Meanwhile, the Platt sons, Nick (Ben Price) and David (Jack P. Sheperd), are trying to regain control over their lives. After hitting Leanne (Jane Danson) at Christmas dinner, Nick feels immense guilt, and the couple tries to put on a united front by telling everyone that Leanne's new black eye was the result of her walking into a door. However, after his guilt gets the better of him, Nick admits to Norris (Malcolm Hebden) that Leanne got her black eye on account of him. His telling the truth sets him on a path to try and change his ways, which forces him to make a decision that will hurt Leanne more than a physical slap ever will.

David is trying to repair his marriage with Kylie (Paula Lane), which initially went south after his bad behavior, but has recently failed at repairing itself due to her bad reaction to the news that David is back in the family fold. Her drunken moments have spiraled out of control, even landing her in jail on Christmas for fighting Tina (Michelle Keegan) in the street. Now, David is concerned as Kylie returns home, while Leanne cautions her sister-in-law that the temper and pride that bring her to drink are preventing her from moving on with her life. Whether or not there's hope for David and Kylie as a couple remains to be seen.

Coronation Street will air Friday with two new episodes at 7:30 and 8:30 p.m. on ITV.
