The second half of Person of Interest season 3 will feature numerous villains as the lives of the POI team become even more difficult.

There will be a large number of "villains" that will set their sights on the POI team in episode 12, including Control (Camryn Manheim) and the Vigilance organization.

Person of Interest executive producer Jonathan Nolan told TVLine that the overarching theme for the second half of season 3 is "escalation." Things are about to get a whole lot more difficult than the HR battle in the first half of the season.

"As taxing, difficult and ultimately lethal as the battle [with HR] was, that was just the beginning of the challenges put in front of our heroes." Nolan said.

Fellow executive producer Greg Plageman added, "We're going to see these various entities jockey for control of The Machine or at least something commensurate with it," which will lead to a point "where Root starts to take matters into her own hands."

Meanwhile, Reese (Jim Caviezel) will still be recovering from the events of the first half of the season, especially the death of Carter (Taraji P. Henson).

"The loss of Carter created a rift between our guys on Team Machine as well as disillusionment on Reese's part," Plageman said. "Something much bigger has to happen if he's ever to come back into the fold."

Person of Interest season 3 returns with a new episode on Tuesday, Jan. 7 at 10 p.m. on CBS.
