"Falling Skies," the much anticipated drama series from executive producer Steven Spielberg, kicked off its Season 2 premiere Sunday on TNT.

Fans raved about the post-apocalyptic series’ return which is expected to bring new depth to the characters, introduce more mysterious alien creatures and begin to unfold the purpose of the alien invasion. The season is also expected to have more action.

"If the first season was about our characters trying to cope with the trauma of having their world turned upside down, this season is about taking action and fighting back. Our heroes of the 2nd Mass will be faced with many challenges and obstacles throughout the season. Some will not survive the journey. But in the end, those that do will be much stronger and ready for anything,” executive producer Remi Aubuchon said.

As for the fans reactions to the show’s comeback:

"Awesome, 3 times as much action than last years' entire season. One complaint, the commercial breaks...Way to may of them...Other than that looking forward to a great season," wrote one viewer on the show's Facebook page.

"Yes, I had my doubts that this year was going to be worth watching, but last night changed all that...great start to what looks like is going to be a great 2nd series," wrote another user.

R&B singer Chris Brown also seems to have anticipated the premiere after he wrote on his Twitter Sunday “Falling Skies!!!”

The series take place in the chaotic aftermath of an alien attack that has left most of the world destroyed. The few survivors have grouped themselves in resistant movements to protect civilians and fight back the aliens.

Noah Wyle (ER) stars as Tom Mason, a former college professor and father of three, who has become an unlikely leader for the 2nd Massachusetts civilian resistance group. Moon Bloodgood (Terminator Salvation) also stars as Anne Glass, a pediatrician who works with the survivors. Will Patton (Armageddon, TNT’s Into the West) plays Weaver, Tom’s commanding officer. The series also stars Drew Roy (Secretariat) as Hal, Tom’s oldest son and a growing fighter in the resistance movement; Maxim Knight (Brothers & Sisters) as Matt, Tom’s youngest son; Connor Jessup (The Saddle Club) as Ben, Tom’s son who was captured by aliens and has since returned to the group; and Seychelle Gabriel (Weeds) as Lourdes, an orphaned pre-med student who helps Anne in the group’s makeshift medical clinic.

Season 2 Premiere Recap

Part 1: “World’s Apart”

The season two premiere began three months after Tom Mason agreed to go with the alien invaders. Weaver is still in command of the 2nd Mass, while Anne continues to serve as medic. They have seen many battles and are a much leaner unit now. Pope has taken command of the Berserkers, a renegade group within the 2nd Mass that Weaver doesn’t fully trust. When Tom suddenly returns, he is faced with doubt about his loyalties to the group. Meanwhile, Hal and Ben continue to drift apart as Ben challenges his older brother’s authority.

Part 2: “Shall We Gather at the River”

Tom is still haunted by memories of his time with the aliens and begins to wonder if they did something to his mind. Pope, who is in charge of questioning Tom, plants seeds of doubt about him among the group. Meanwhile, Ben’s hatred for skitters grows, and the 2nd Mass scouts locate an old bridge that will help them cross the river to safety ahead of an impending attack.

“Falling Skies” is broadcast Sundays on TNT at 9 p.m.

The show was basic cable’s No. 1 series in 2011 averaging more than 6.9 million viewers, according to TNT.
