The season 5 finale of The Vampire Diaries will be a major challenge for Damon and Elena as the show's executive producer teased a lot of upcoming drama for the on-again off-again couple portrayed by Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev.

Bonnie To Die on Finale As 'The Other Side is Falling Apart'

"The couple is put through their ultimate test as they try to save their friends, their town, and each other," Julie Plec told E!'s TV scoop.

Somerhalder, who showed off his darker side this season, also revealed that the finale will be a shocker. "The way it ends, I never saw coming," he told Metro New York. "It's going to freak a bunch of people out."

Enzo Returns As 'Ghost Villan'

Damon and Elena's romantic relationship heated up again after she confessed her love for him in a recent episode, but it's not necessarily a good thing.

"They have to put on their big-boy pants and big-girl pants," Somerhalder said about their characters at the 2014 PaleyFest Panel. Dobrev added: "The problem is they keep taking their pants off and that keeps getting in the way of things."

Elena's relationship with Damon's brother Stefan has also been rocky throughout the years. However, Paul Wesley, who plays Stefan, said the two characters will eventually deal with their conflicts.

"Those two are like perpetually a pendulum that swings. There's really no algorithm," Wesley told E! Online. "I don't think anything that happens is permanent, so the answer to that question is that I'm sure they'll work it out in the end."

-- The Vampire Diaries season 5 finale airs on May 15 at 8 p.m. on The CW.
