While fans are unsure of Damon's fate on The Vampire Diaries after the intense season 5 finale, the show's executive producer has offered some answers.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Julie Plec revealed that The Other Side is destroyed, but Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Bonnie (Kat Graham) will return for season 6. Yet, it's unclear in what capacity fans will get to see the two beloved characters, who were stuck on The Other Side on the finale.

"I mean, there's a million different ways that you can do that," she said. "But as far as in what context - how, why, and where? - that's part of the mystery."

Plec also spoke about how the other characters, like Damon's love Elena (Nina Dobrev), will handle the loss. "I think the most important thing I can say about season 6 is our characters fundamentally have to come to terms with the fact that Damon and Bonnie are gone forever, and have been doing so for quite some time when we return," she said.

She added, "Some are in denial, some are still searching for answers. 'They've got to be somewhere. Where are they? We've got to rescue them.' Some have given up completely. Each individual character's reaction to the loss of these two people will be what informs the beginning of the sixth season."

As for season 6 being the last one, Plec said there's a lot more to come and a series finale is nowhere near, adding, "You could ask 10 different people that question and you'd get 10 different answers, in terms of how long the life of the show is. Warner Bros. would say, '17 seasons!' And I think I would say, 'Seven!'"
