In a world populated by the likes of Victor Frankenstein and Dorian Gray, Showtime's latest drama Penny Dreadful paints Victorian England in it's grimmest, most supernatural form. With vampires and mediums at every turn, it seems everyone in London is hiding a secret. As episode four nears this Sunday, audiences continue to wonder: who is Ethan Chandler?

Played with charm and intensity by Josh Hartnett (The Faculty, Pearl Harbor), Ethan Chandler has floated through the first three episodes of Penny Dreadful as a hired gun fleeing a mysterious past in America. Intrigued by a medium and charmed by a poor young woman, he decides to leave his traveling wild west show to stay in London, where dark workings are afoot.

The latest clip to emerge from episode four hints than that maybe Chandler's past will be revealed sooner than anticipated. When Dr. Frankenstein insists they use Chandler's human blood for an experiment, he is adamantly refused. "That's not a good idea..." Chandler assures him with a glint in his steady eyes, "Trust me."

Add this to a scene in episode one where Chandler wakes up by the docks, groggy and scarred, and it's possible he has the makings of a closeted werewolf, if not some other unique creature.

Of course, if that's not enough, there is always Vanessa Ives' interest in Chandler. Ms. Ives (Eva Green), a known medium, gravitates towards the unusual. The only question left is how deep and darkly do Ethan Chandler's secrets lie?
