'True Detective' Season 2 Spoilers: New Stars Have to Do Their 'Homework,' Given By HBO Series Creator? [VIDEO]
HBO's breakout hit True Detective has become known for it's commitment to the genre. Creator Nic Pizzolatto has strived to populate the show with both sophisticated narrative arcs and gritty, complex characters.
True Detective's New Season to Include Another 'One Take Gauntlet'?
According to a recent May 2014 interview with The Hollywood Reporter (featured below), Pizzolatto made sure his stars, Mathew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, were on that same level of commitment.
"The first thing I did when they arrived for preproduction and rehearsals," explained Pizzolatto in THR interview, "Was I handed them [McConaughey and Harrelson] box sets of Deadwood and The Wire... and they loved them."
He went on to comment that "it's getting to where if serious actors don't want to play super heroes, there's nothing left... so you know, give them a season of television."
With Pizzolatto's philosophy on television, it makes sense that he would request his stars was successful HBO crime dramas. He will most likely ask the same of his new stars for the second season, all of whom have yet to be cast, but will he give them the same programs? Or will he utilize different ones?
The answer to this question will likely be based on the tone and sensibility of True Detective's second season. If it strays drastically from season one, different material may be required for inspiration.
Casting for season 2 of True Detective is scheduled to begin in June 2014. The season will air sometime in January 2015.
