John Logan was inspired to write Showtime's Penny Dreadful after revisiting Mary Shelly's classic 1818 novel, Frankenstein. He believed the themes and characters are still fascinating to audiences today, and began forming the program around Victorian London, utilizing key literary characters such as Victor Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway) and Dracula's Mina Harper.

Is Penny Dreadful a Hit?

With the introduction of another Dracula character, Van Helsing, in the show's fourth episode, as well as Frankenstein's "creature" (Rory Kinear), is it possible that Elizabeth Lavenza could be next?

Lavenza is a girl in Shelly's novel who is adopted by Victor's family. It is intended that the two shall be married. She is fond of poetry, as is Frankenstein, and stands as a loyal character in the novel.

More Literary Characters to Come on Showtime's Penny Dreadful?

The Showtime series paints Frankenstein as a man of singular focus. As he explains to Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton), he is devoted to understanding "the flicker between life and death."

However, episode 3 flashbacks revealed that he had been very fond of his mother. Her death even led to his interest in science. The tenderness for poetry and literature is there, under the surface, and so Lavenza could be introduced as a character via that avenue. It could also open the character of Frankenstein of up to evolve throughout the series.

Logan seems to know his literature and will likely continue to blend fresh, new characters with literary icons.

The fifth episode of Penny Dreadful will air on Showtime on Sunday, May 8, 2014 at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT.
