'Penny Dreadful' Rumors: Secret Spoilers Planted In Opening Sequence of Showtime Series? [VIDEO]
The opening sequence to Showtime's Penny Dreadful has provided a source for speculation and, in some cases, confirmation to audiences about what's coming up next on the supernatural, Victorian drama.
Is Mina Harker Doomed On Penny Dreadful?
The most striking comparison is possibly the image of the wolf cut before the image of Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett), whom audiences have by now assume is a werewolf. Tarot cards are grouped with Vanessa Ives (Eva Green), the clairvoyant and guilt-ridden woman in search of her abducted old friend Mina Harker.
The frequent show of bats during the opening titles correlate to the prominence of vampyric creatures on the series, and the glimpses of sewn flesh are representative of Victor Frankenstein's (Harry Treadaway) endeavors.
More Flashbacks Coming On Penny Dreadful?
With all the symbolism and suggestion to be found in the two-minute sequence, certain clues seem even more striking because of their ambiguity. There are only two episodes left in the program's first season, and so the placement of the snake during the opening sequence is starting to look more and more curious. Is it a representation of the garden of Eden? Is it the sins of Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton), footage of whom follows right after that of the snake?
Perhaps the snake is a symbol of the devil possessing Miss Ives, for the snake is seen slithering beside a cast-off cross, and Miss Ives is known to be a devout Catholic. Or perhaps there is something darker coming, something that has yet to be revealed.
Whatever it is, audiences will find out soon enough, especially now that the series has been picked up for a second season.
Penny Dreadful continues with its ninth episode this Sunday at 10 ET/PT.
