Bankston was working at his job at the Alabama Warrior Railway Tuesday where he died after the train derailed. The 26-year-old came in ninth place on Survivor: Blood vs. Water.
Word first spread through Facebook and Twitter Tuesday night among former Survivor contestants. Aras Baskauskas, who competed with Bankston on Blood vs. Water, spoke to People about the loss.

"Caleb was an amazing man and friend," he said. "One of the sweetest and most sincere humans I've ever come across. I am gutted by his loss. My thoughts and prayers are with his family."
Baskauskas' brother Vytas Baskauskas, who also competed on Survivor: Blood vs. Water with him, tweeted:
"You will be missed @CalebOndus; one of the most kind, loving and authentic people I've ever met. Thank you for sharing your light with us."
Similarly, Sabrina Thompson, who competed with Cumbie on Survivor: One World, had nothing but kind words for Bankston.
"While playing Survivor with Colton, he would talk about his boyfriend, Caleb, around the clock 24/7. Within seconds of meeting Caleb at the finale and Survivor events, it's no wonder why he raved about him. You were instantly drawn to his big smile, warm spirit and Southern charm. May God rest his soul ... gone too soon."
During Survivor: Blood vs. Water, viewers may most remember him as comforting Cumbie after the latter chose to quit the game. Bankston also shifted the game after voting out tribe leader Brad Culpepper.
Bankston is the third contestant in the show's 14-year history to die. Survivor: Palau contestant Jenn Lyon died in 2010 of breast cancer, while original Survivor contestant B.B. Andersen died in 2013 of brain cancer.
