'The Mindy Project' Season 3 Premiere: 'Cheers' Star Rhea Perlman Joins Cast; Set To Play Danny's Mother [VIDEO]
The Mindy Project has become somewhat infamous for its constant adding and subtracting the show has done with its cast, but a recent addition seems fairly encouraging.
Breaking Bad's Anna Gunn To Guest On The Mindy Project
On Wednesday, TVLine reported that Rhea Perlman has been cast in the role of Danny Castellano's mother Annette.
This will be a recurring role for Perlman, who is best known for her role as Carla Tortelli on NBC's classic sitcom Cheers, a show for which she won four Emmys. Recently, she had a supporting role in TV Land's short-lived show Kirstie, starring her former Cheers co-star Kirstie Alley.
Mindy Kaling Talks Season 2 of The Mindy Project
At the end of season 2 of The Mindy Project, Mindy, played by show creator Mindy Kaling, and Danny, played by Chris Messina, reunited as a romantic couple, and this time it seems likely to stick for a while, if only to take the show out of the will they/won't they territory to try something new. In a conversation with the press, Kaling stated that Perlman's character will clash with both Mindy and Danny, and that the third episode of the season is called Annette Castellano is My Nemesis, so it seems clear what kind of role this will be for Perlman.
Fortunately, she should be up for it, because Perlman has been playing caustic characters for pretty much her entire career. How many episodes she will be in, and if she will return for a fourth season if there is one, remains to be seen. The Mindy Project returns to FOX on September 16.
