Katie Couric Says It Was Very Hard to Watch Ann Curry's Departure from 'Today'
Katie Couric said Thursday it was very hard to watch Ann Curry leaving the "Today" show last month.
Speaking at the Television Critics Association press tour today to promote her new talk show "Katie," the newswoman shared her thoughts about Curry's ousting from the show.
"My heart was breaking for her that morning." Couric said at the TCA in Beverly Hills, California. "It must have been horribile to have that played out on the public stage.... It was very hard to watch."
Curry announced her tearful departure on June 28, just one year into the job, amid a decline in ratings.
"This is not easy to say. Today is going to be my last morning as a regular co-host of TODAY," Curry said fighting back tears. "I will still be a part of the TODAY show family, but I'm going to have a new title and a new role."
Curry was replaced by Savannah Guthrie as main co-host on the show. She returned to the morning show for a special coverage on the Colorado shootings last Saturday.
Couric's new Talk Show will debut on September 10 in syndication. It is her first permanent gig since CBS Evening News which she left in 2011.
