U.S. Women's Soccer Team Beat Canada, Move on for the Gold Against Japan
The U.S. women's soccer team is moving on to the gold medal round against Team Japan after a 4-3 victory over Canada on Aug. 6.
The players could not scream any louder than they did, making no effort to contain their excitement as cameras caught them jumping and hugging their team players.
Monday's semifinal win guaranteed the team a rematch with Japan, whom they were paired with in the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup Final last July. After a 2-2 tie was settled, Japan won the finals, becoming the first Asian team to win a FIFA World Cup, according to the Bleacher Report.
On Monday, U.S. player Alex Morgan knocked a 6-yard header high into the net scored the winning goal for her team as Canada goalkeeper Erin McLeod saw the ball fly past her before she could catch it.
The U.S. team now has a chance to redeem themselves and claim the title they badly desire.
The competition plays out on London's Wembley Stadium on Thursday, Aug. 9 at 2:45 p.m., Eastern time.
The U.S. soccer team has played in the finals round in every Summer Olympic Games since the Atlanta Games in 1996, where women's soccer first debuted at the Olympics, according to CNN. They won the gold that year as well as in 2004 and 2008.
