Olympic Medal Count 2012 Chart: USA's Top Olympic Medal Winners of 2012 [FULL LIST]
While in London, USA won 104 Olympic medals but more importantly, let us see which athletes ranked highest by winning their own Olympic medals. With no surprise to many, the top three are all USA swimmers.
Coming in the number one spot with a total of six London Olympic medals is swimmer Michael Phelps. For his performances this summer he nabbed four Olympic gold and two silvers. Phelps participated in seven swimming relays and announced earlier this year that this will be his last Olympic Games. He also won big in the 2000, 2004 and 2008 Games, where four years ago he set the record by being the first person by winning eight medals in one Olympics. The 27-year old also won the most 2012 medals out of all the male athletes from all the participating countries.
Coming in second place, also for her amazing skills in the water, is swimmer Missy Franklin with a total of five Olympic medals from this year. Although this year was her Olympic debut, Franklin came in acting like no rookie - she performed in seven competitions and won herself four gold medals in London, her fifth being a bronze. The Aurora, CO, resident broke the record for the 200-meter backstroke last fall and has been a threat for many years now. She won her first world title in 2011 at the age of 16, according to NBC.
Following Franklin is Allison Schmitt in third place with five medals, only three being gold. She swam alongside Franklin in many of the relays and in the 2008 Games, she won herself a silver and a bronze. This summer is Schmitt's second Olympics and the 22-year-old Georgia native won the gold in the women's 4x100-meter medley, 4x200-meter freestyle and the 200-meter freestyle. She also set the world record for the 4x100-meter with a clocked time of 3:52.05, arguably making her one of the best freestyle swimmers in the U.S., according to NBC.
