Paul Wesley Directs Vampire Diaries Episode
"There's some beautiful moments and I do think ultimately that something will happen. It's just a slow burn," he said.
The two characters were intended to be a major focus of season six.
"She's going to realize it's a little more one-sided than she was hoping, and there's going to be some fallout from that," executive producer Caroline Dries told TVLine.com in a September interview. "But just because one character doesn't like another character, that doesn't mean it's not a fascinating love story."
Dries previously divulged some more information about their relationship to Alloy Entertainment, saying that the situation isn't simple because of Elena and Stefan's past. It's made Caroline a little unsure of her own feelings.
"Her feelings for Stefan are (at the conscious level right now) friend feelings. I personally feel like she's not quite sure what she's feeling. It's all types of confusing," Dries said. "The feelings behind the feelings are something we get to explore in season 6 as we watch how her relationship with Stefan plays out in the wake of the finale."
The Vampire Diaries airs on Thursdays at 8 p.m. EST on The CW.
